Why Do I Have Spiders In My Sacramento Home?
April 15, 2021
Of all the pests you might come across in your Sacramento home, few raise as much fear as spiders. Maybe it’s the creepy crawly manner in which they move around, or maybe it’s their venom-inflicting fangs. Whatever the reason may be, spiders just aren’t a welcome sight in any home. While most spiders are harmless, some do pose real threats to our safety. That’s why it’s so important for you to know the steps you can take to limit your exposure to spiders and the other pests that attract them.
Identifying Common Area Spiders
While there are thousands of different spiders across the world, here in Sacramento, some of the most common home invaders are cellar spiders, wolf spiders, jumping spiders, and black widows. Cellar spiders are brown with small bodies and long, slender legs. They are known for building messy webs in the corners of cellars, attics, garages, and other storage spaces. Wolf spiders can grow to be over an inch long. They have dark brown bodies, sometimes with lighter markings. Wolf spiders do not build webs, but, instead, hunt for their food. Despite their menacing appearance, wolf spiders do not pose any real threat to humans. Jumping spiders grow to be about 1/8th of an inch, and can be black, brown, tan, or gray. They get their name from the jumping manner by which they move around. Black widows are, as their name suggests, black in color, and the females feature a distinctive red hourglass-like figure on their abdomens. Black widows are considered to be the most dangerous spider in the United States. If you are bitten by a black widow, seek medical attention immediately.
Reasons Why Spiders Come Into Homes
There are several reasons why spiders might enter a home, some of which are quite innocuous. For instance, spiders might enter simply because there are easy ways inside. However, the most common reason for spiders to enter a home is the presence of other pests upon which they can feed. As such, the presence of spiders in a home is usually indicative of further pest problems. Therefore, factors such as moisture buildup, the improper storage of trash and food, and untidiness can all attract pests which, in turn, attract spiders.
Ways To Reduce Factors That Attract Spiders
Given that spiders will enter homes in search of food, the best method for spider prevention is practicing general pest prevention. You should also be sure to seal off any potential entry points. To keep spiders, and the pests that attract them, out of your home, you need to:
- Store all food in airtight containers or the fridge.
- Promptly wipe up spills, crumbs, or other food debris from counters and floors.
- Refrain from stacking dirty dishes in your sink for long periods.
- Store trash in bins with tight-fitting lids.
- Take out the trash regularly.
- Use dehumidifiers to address moisture buildup in your home, especially poorly-ventilated areas.
- Keep storage spaces free of debris.
- Wipe away spiderwebs as you come across them.
- Seal off entry points around windows and doors by installing door sweeps, weather-stripping, and screens.
- Fill in cracks in your home’s foundation with caulk.
